Spearheaded by Lakeside students James Beeson, Ben Bolin and Taylor Radloff, along with Teens for Christ advisor, Ruth Hirschfeld, the school-wide effort delivered two vehicles full of food staples and a check to the volunteers at the food pantry.
The group used announcements and posters over a three week period to encourage all students in the school of 376 to bring in non-perishable items for collection. Faculty and staff joined in with food donations, and also committed to cash donations based on a percentage match of the pounds collected. The Watertown Food Pantry was pleased to see so many requested items supplied, including pancake mix, syrup, and canned staples.
"We're very pleased with the response from our Lakeside families," says Hirschfeld. "This is another opportunity to give in thankfulness for all that we have been given." Teens for Christ is a newly reorganized group that focuses on education regarding all life issues, and commits itself to service projects. The group meets regularly throughout the school year to discuss life issues and plan group activities that relate to the topic. Other teens have also recently participated in sorting toys for the "Gifts for Watertown Children" program and by adopting a family under the "Christmas Neighbors" program.
Lakeside Lutheran teen organizers James Beeson (left) and Taylor Radloff help fill the vehicles destined for the Watertown Food Pantry after students held a school-wide drive that brought in over 1,300 pounds of food and over $300 in cash during December. Missing from the picture is organizer Ben Bolin.

LAKE MILLS - Lakeside Lutheran High School hosted a special celebration to honor the nation’s veterans on Friday, November 4 that included a keynote speech from Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch.
Over 100 veterans from several branches of service spent the morning at Lakeside. The veterans represented decades of military service, from World War II to the conflicts and wars in Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Beirut, Iraq and Afghanistan. After a breakfast and social time for veterans and their guests, Principal James Grasby greeted the veterans and introduced the keynote speaker. Wisconsin's Lieutenant Governor, Rebecca Kleefisch then spoke to those in attendance.
"Sometimes only force permits us to pursue peace," Kleefisch said. "When the U.S. is compelled to use her military might, I am glad that it has been you defending her. You have been guardians of freedom, and ambassadors of our great country."
A special Veterans Day Chapel Service that included the entire student assembly, faculty and staff followed the keynote speech.
